Electroresponsive Weak Polyelectrolyte Brushes

چکیده

We explored the effect of an applied electric field on molecular conformation two weak polyelectrolytes grafted gold electrodes?poly(acrylic acid) and polybase poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)?by combining a quartz crystal microbalance with electrochemical setup. Our results indicate that different mechanisms influence response to externally potential difference, including modification local pH by oxygen reduction electrostatic interaction between metallic electrode charged monomers ions in solution. evidence fine control polymer can be readily obtained at low potentials, opening pathways for precise, localized surface properties. However, these applications require considering history-dependent behavior polyelectrolyte brushes, hysteresis response, reactions driven changes.

Behavior of Weak Polyelectrolyte Brushes in Mixed Salt Solutions

Hydrophilic and hydrophobic weak polybasic brushes immersed in aqueous solutions of mixed salt counterions are considered using a mean-field numerical self-consistent field approach. On top of the solvent quality of the polymer, the counterion-solvent interactions are accounted for by implementing Flory-Huggins interaction parameters. We show that ion specificity within the brush can bring abou...

Lubrication by Polyelectrolyte Brushes

We develop a scaling model relating the friction forces between two polyelectrolyte brushes sliding over each other to the separation between grafted surfaces, number of monomers and charges per chain, grafting density of chains, and solvent quality. We demonstrate that the lateral force between brushes increases upon compression, but to a lesser extent than the normal force. The shear stress a...

Ionic effects in collapse of polyelectrolyte brushes.

We investigated the effect of counterion valence on the structure and swelling behavior of polyelectrolyte brushes using a nonlocal density functional theory that accounts for the excluded-volume effects of all ionic species and intrachain and electrostatic correlations. It was shown that charge correlation in the presence of multivalent counterions results in collapse of a polyelectrolyte brus...

Theory of Lubrication due to Polyelectrolyte Brushes

It is shown using a method based on the mean field theory of Miklavic Marcelja that it should be possible for osmotic pressure due to the counterions associated with the two polyelectrolyte polymer brush coated surfaces to support a reasonable load (i.e., about 105Pa) with the brushes held sufficiently far apart to prevent entanglement of polymers belonging to the two brushes, thus avoiding wha...

Synthesis of gold nanoparticles inside polyelectrolyte brushes

In this work we report on the synthesis and characterization of Au nanoparticles grown in the inner environment of cationic polyelectrolyte brushes. The nanocomposite synthesis relies on loading the macromolecular film with AuCl4 2 precursor ions followed by their in situ reduction to Au nanoparticles. We observed that the nanoparticles are uniform in size and are fully stabilized by the surrou...
